STUDY ON MODIFYING OF HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE BY ORGANIC MMT

The sodium montmorillonite(MMT) is treated by four kinds of cation surfactants such as dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and di-octadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, and organic MMT(OMMT) is obtained. HDPE/OMMT nanometer composite is prepared through melt intercalation. At the same time, the relationship of interlayer space of OMMT with the alkyl chain of quaternary ammonium salt is studied. The results show that the interlayer space of OMMT increases with the growth of alkyl chain. With the increase of content of OMMT, the breaking elongation and tensile strength of HDPE/OMMT nanometer composite decrease, the flexural modulus increases, the flexural strength occurs the maximum, and the mechanical properties of the composite get certain improvement.
