Multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNTs)are treated by different oxidative acids,and epoxy(EP)/MWNTs composites are prepared.It is showed that the conductivity of the epoxy can be greatly increased with a small quantity of MWNT addition.The composite prepared with the HNO3 treatment has a best conductive property and exhibits a percolation threshold of 0.5%.One reason for this can be attributed to that the HNO3 treatment introduces the carboxyl and hydroxyl onto MWNTs as well as shorten the MWNTs to a suitable length,which greatly improve the dispersivity of MWNTs in epoxy,the other is the conductivity of MWNTs is enhanced by the acidification.In contrast,the composite prepared without acidification treatment shows poorer dispersivity and has a percolation threshold of 1.3%.For the composite with mixed acid(VHNO3:VH2SO4=1:3) treatment,the conductivity is poorest and presents a percolation threshold of 1.6%.This is due to the fact that quantities of defects are introduced into MWNTs by the mixed acid treatment and at the same time MWNTs are subjected to chain-scission to be too short,which is disadvantage to the formation of conductive network.
