Effect of Ply Parameters on Mechanical Properties of GFRP Laminates

Laminates with ply orientations of 0°,15°,30°,45°,60°,75°,90° and bidirectional laminates of [–45/+45] and [0/90] were fabricated by hand lay-up molding. The effects of ply orientations,ply layer's number and ply mode on the mechanicalproperties of GFRP laminates were studied. The results show that the lamination parameters have a signi?cant effect on the mechani-cal properties of GFRP laminates. The bending strength of three-layer [90]3 and six-layer [90]6 GFRP laminates is the highest whenthe laminates are unidirectionally oriented. [0]3 and [0]6 oriented GFRP laminates have the best tensile properties,and the tensilestrength of six-layer GFRP laminates is better than three-layer GFRP laminates. The tensile strength of symmetrical bidirectional [0/90]3 laminates is 2.7 times higher than that of [–45/+45]3,and 21% more than that of [0]6 laminates. The bending strength of [0]6 laminates is 3 times higher than that of symmetrical bidirectional [–45/+45]3 laminates,and 13% more than that of [0/90]3 lami-nates.The tensile strength and bending strength of [0/90]3 laminates are more than those of [–45/+45]3 laminates.
