Readjustment of Marriage Laws and the Stability of the Grass-root Society in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

BIAN Li
For the purpose of maintaining social stability, the feudal regimes of the Ming and Qing Dynasties attached great importance to the making and readjustment of marriage laws. With the development of economy and social changes, legal marriage endorsed by state laws and certain marriage practices common in the grass-root society went into sharp conflict.Under such circumstances, the Ming and Qing regimes made compromise with the customary practices in the grass-root society, they made certain readjustments of some outmoded clauses of the marriage laws so as to maintain social stability. On the other hand, the grass-root society also made certain compromises with the state laws.As a result, some kind of benign interaction between the state and the grass-root society was achieved, social stability was maintained and the rule of the feudal regime was consolidated.
