Quentin: The Demonstration of Macbeth's Motto of Life——An Intertextual Critique on The Sound and the Fury

RAO Xiao-hong(School of Foreign Studies,Fuzhou University,Fuzhou,Fujian,350001)
Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury is not only named after the famous dialogue about life in Shakespeare's Macbeth, but also has the intertextual relationship with the dialogue. In Quentin's stream of consciousness,"shadow" and the sound of the watch or clock are jointly used to build the sad and depressing tone of the text. The images of "shadow" and "time" demonstrate Quentin's suffering and struggle.Seen from the perspective of intertextuality,Quentin's stream of consciousness is the demonstration of Macbeth's motto of life in the famous dialogue.
