XU Fu-lai(School of Humanities,Nanchang University,Nanchang,Jiangxi 330047)
In the modern Neo-Confucianism,Liang Shuming was among the few who wanted to integrate theory and practice, morals and ethics, private life and social reality and reconstruct them on the new basis. His contributions lie in the following aspects. For the first part,Liang tried, through his own life experience,to advocate true Confucianism,to discover Confucius' wisdom of life, and to illuminate the true ethical spirit of Confucianism.Secondly,he was aware that without the restriction of rules and moral principles, ethical practice could never come true. Moreover,he pointed out that the end of modernization is not only for wealth and material prosperity, but also for a new life.In a word, based on the traditional Chinese ethical spirit,Liang Shuming tried to find a new way out for China and a new life for the Chinese people. His efforts will reveal more and more clearly their significance for China and even for the world in the 21st century.
