A Study on Theme Equivalence in the Chinese-English Translation of Legal Texts ——Taking The Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region of the People's Republic of China as an Example

ZHU Xiao - mei;JIANG Pei - ru;School of Foreign Studies,Anhui University;
The equivalence in translation should include theme equivalence which can be realized in the majority situations in the translation of legal texts from Chinese to English. However,theme un- equivalence also exists in the following cases: zero themes in Chinese are translated to visible themes in English; adverbial modifier is moved to be rheme in English instead of being theme in Chinese; the transition between active voice and passive voice in both Chinese and English; the transition between topic theme in Chinese and subject theme in English. The first two cases are more obvious in the translation of unmarked themes while the last two are more obvious in the translation of marked themes.
