A Contrastive Study of Durative Adverbial “for-phrases” in English and Words of Time-quantity in Chinese

FENG Ming (Teaching college of Hongkou District of Shanghai,Shanghai,200081,China)
Through a comparison between durative adverbial “for-phrases” in English and words of time-quantity in Chinese, this paper tries to analyze the different usage of words of time-quantity in Chinese and prove that words of time-quantity in Chinese are not always equiv-alent to durative adverbial “for-phrases” in English.Words of time-quantity can be placed be-fore or after a verb but the preverbal ones usually do not express span of duration except in some particular structures.Only continuous verbs can take post-verbal words of time-quantity as dura-tive adverial and those with instantaneous verbs indicate the lapse of time after the completion of act.
