Choice of Meaning in Translation

XU Jian-long(Foreign Language Department, South China Normal University, Guangzhou 510631, China)
Traditional translation theories often argue with each other in some translation paradoxes, ignoring the plurality of meaning. Emphasizing on one side of the binary oppositon will cause one-sideness. Proceeding from the plurality of meaning, the author discusses that the problems in translation are mainly problems of choice. Then the paper provides three factors that influence choice in translation -- translation aims, text types and reader's types. Different translation norms should be established on the basis of them.
