A Brief Comparison of Contemporary American and Chinese Address Terms

ZHANG Yan(Foreign Language Department, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei 230026, China)
This paper intends to discuss, in terms of Brown and Gilman's theory of "Power and Solidarity", the differences between contemporary American and Chinese address terms with respect to second person pronouns and social address terms. The principal of "Power and Solidarity" is also true to Chinese address terms, in which "Power" plays a more significant role than "Solidarity", and among the factors of "Power" both social status and age are not easily surpassed. In American address terms, "Solidarity" is now becoming the major element that substitutes "Power", and among the factors of "Power" social status is more important than age. Chinese social address terms lack general social address terms and constantly borrow kin terms compared with those in American English.
