ZHENG Tao(School of Arts,Guangxi Normal University,Guilin 541004,China)
During the Mid-Tang period, ideological changes greatly took place in the circles of monks and laymen, zen theories, especially Hongzhou zen created by Mazu Daoyi, such as "bother non-Buddha","A common heart is the way","Buddhism is nothing, but ordinary matter"and"Do not bother to be a Buddha",make Hongzhou zen develop rapidly during this period, and accepted by many scholar-officials.These theories just meet the life mentality of the scholar-officials at that time, that is,it is necessary to adhere to the principles of Confucianism, while maintaining independent personality,Bai Juyi and Quan Deyu are the most typical among theem.
