Reviews of Maize Science and Technology during 50 Years and the Prospects in the Early 21st Century in Shandong Province

Since the founding of our People's Republic,maize science and technology workers of Shandong Province have made numerous studies in many fields such as inheritance and breeding,theories and techniques of cultivating,prevention and cure of plant diseases and insect pests and so on.Prominent achievements have been acquired.These could be reflected by 96 awards of science and technology from 1978 to 1998,more than 20 selected inbred lines and over 100 bred hybrids.From 1949 to 1999,planting area of maize in Shandong Province has been expanded by 19.3 times,unit yield increased by 5.23 times,and total yield increased by 17.3 times.At the beginning of 21st century,increasing yield per unit area and improving quality are the central targets for studies on maize inheritance and breeding of Shandong Province.Hybrids that have potential yield 900~1000kg/666.7m 2 and value enhanced corn varieties for special purpose will be cultivated.Modernized hi-technology will be applied in breeding and maize productive technology level will be rose greatly.In future ,maize average yield will reach more than 500kg/666.7m 2.According to these targets,emphasized tasks of science and technology research of maize in Shandong Province are put forward in this paper.
