Effect of selenium on salt resistance and ultrastructure of Rumex patientia×R tianshanicus

In saline soil, supplementing selenium could significantly enhance the biomass, ratio of root and top, soluble sugar content, POD activity, ratio of K + and Na + and absolute concentrations of K + and Na + in Rumex patientia×R tianshannicus, and decrease plasmamembrane permeability and free proline content Under salt stress, Rumex patientia×R tianshannicus supplemented with selenium or not showed the same characteristics as common plants Cell membrane system was indistinct, thylakoids swelled and the number of grana lamellae reduced Endoplasmic reticula were around the vacuoles inside which there were some decomposed cell pieces It was conjectured that endoplasmic reticula played an important role in cells' dealing with saline environment The volume, shape, arranging-pattern of chloroplasts in R patientia×R tianshanicus supplemented with selenium were significantly changed, the structure of membrane system was improved, chloroplasts were closer to mitochondria than that of no-supplementing selenium, and the quantity of pieces in cells decomposed for salt stress decreased
