The synergy of copper ion and uncoupler for sludge reduction

The effects of different initial concentrations of Cu2+,Zn2+ and pNP on the growth rate of sludge and sludge volume index(SVI) were investigated.Comparative analysis was conducted to explore the inhibitory effects of Cu2+ and Zn2+ on COD removal rate.The results showed that the growth rate of sludge decreased with increase in the concentrations of Cu2+,Zn2+ and pNP,where as a little change was observed in SVI.The optimal concentrations were 9 mg·L-1 for Cu2+,15 mg·L-1 for Zn2+ and 20 mg·L-1 for pNP,respectively.The inhibitory effects of Zn2+ on the activity of sludge for decomposing organic compound were lower than those of Cu2+.The coexistence of Cu2+ and pNP was favorable to the sludge reduction with an optimal concentration ratio of 9∶1 for Cu2+∶pNP.
