UPPER MANTLE SHEARING AND VOLCANIC ACTIVITIES ALONG THE TAN-LU FAULT ZONE IN CENOZOIC

Large scale eruption of mantle derived basalts along the Tan Lu fault zone was associated with upper mantle shearing of the fault zone.At the stage of Eogene extensional activity,extensional shearing at upper mantle and asthenosphere upwelling and lithosphere delamination were the main causes of the basaltic magma activity.Mantle derived xenoliths in Neogene Quaternary basalts along the fault zone indicate the presence of ductile shear belts at upper mantle,depths of the fault zone and its mantle rheology.Under the setting of Neogene Quaternary compression,compressive or transpressive upper mantle shearing →mantle metasomatism→partial melting was mechanism of the basaltic eruption along the fault zone.
