Studies on the Bioaccumulation of Pb with Several Herb Species along by a Highway

Pot tests of Pb bioaccumulation with several herb species,Ophiopogon japonicus,Eephyranthes candida,Oxalis rubra as ground cover plants and Festuca arundinacea,Poa pratensis,Lolium perenne,Trifolium repens as turf grasses,were conducted under the simulated greenhouse conditions.Concentrations of Pb in soil,100,200 and 500 mg/kg,used in this study were selected base on the range of Pb concentrations in the soil along by a highway.Control systems without Pb in soil were included in each test.Results showed that all test species were basically tolerant of Pb and could grow normally.Among these species,Lolium perenne had the maximal biomass.The BAF of ground cover plants were higher than turf grasses.Trifolium repens had the highest BAF of Pb,BAF 0.20 at Pb concentration in soil of 100mg/kg and BAF 0.40 at Pb concentration in soil of 500mg/kg.The BAFs of Poa pratensis and Lolium prerenne were 0.12 and 0.08,respectively at Pb concentration in soil of 500mg/kg.With the increase of Pb concentration in soil,the BAF of Festuca arundinacea and all the ground cover plants to be dropped.For Ophiopogon japonicus,Eephyranthes candida and Oxalis rubra,the bioaccumulation of Pb by the aboveground part was stronger than that by the underground part.
