An Analysis of the Desire Theme in the 19~(th) Century European and American Literature

SUN Hong-zhen(Faculty of Foreign Languages,Tianjin University of Science and Technology,Tianjin 300222,China)
Thematic study focuses on the change of one theme during the cross-cultural exchanges through history. The theme of "desire" and the conflict between "desire" and "reason" are the basic motifs of literature. The development of capitalism and accordingly the eagerness for material directly lead to the inflation of human desire at the bottom of one's heart.Without the yoke and restraint of reason, the gradual explosion of desire will definitely attribute to character distortion and physiological disintegration. However, reason is the main distinction of human being as opposed to animals. The fact that depravity comes from human desire conveys human nature undoubtedly and the fact that reason is always shining in the abyss of desire presents the human creature's distinguished existence in the world. There is enough reason to believe that reason will always lighten the road of human's pursuit for perfect human nature.
