Characteristics and Cultural Techniques of the Three-line Medium Japonica Hybrid Rice--III You 98

Zhang Peijiang (Rice Research Institute, Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Hefei 230031)  
III You 98 (23A/R98), newly-developed by the Rice Research Institute of Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., Japan and the China National Seed Group Corporation, was a three-line japonica hybrid rice. It was released to farmers in February, 2002. In Anhui Medium Japonica Rice Variety Regional Trials in 1998 and 1999, it yielded a mean of 8.817 t/hm 2, 12.8% higher than that of the check 80 You 121, with a growth duration of 146 days. It was about 120 cm tall and had strong tillering ability and strong lodging resistant ability. Its seed setting percentage was more than 80% with a mean of 180 spikelets/panicle and a 1?000-grain weight of 24~25?g.All quality characters of III You 98 could reach the first or second class fine quality rice standards issued by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. The combination was evaluated for rice blast (2~3) and bacterial leaf blight (5) resistance in Anhui (both scored on the 1-9 scales). The high-yielding cultural techniques for the combination were also discussed.
