Research Progress in Genetic Analysis of the Biosynthesis of Phytosterols and Triterpene Saponins

The phytosterols and triterpene saponins are two kinds of plant secondary metabolites,which have the immune system modulation functions,anti-hyperglycemic activities and anti-cancer effects in the organism.There are several pivotal enzymes in the biosynthesis,such as squalene synthase(SS),squalene epoxidase(SE),oxidosqualene cyclases(OSCs),glucosyltransferase(GT) and so on.Here,we summarized the research progress in the catalysis mechanism,gene cloning,expression and regulation of those enzymes.In addition,in this paper also the extensive background of increasing production of the phytosterols and triterpene saponins through the engineering metabolites of the important enzymes were briefly discussed.
