Restoration and Rreconstruction of Degraded Forest Ecosystem in the Upper Reache of the Minjiang River

XI Yi et al (Key Laboratory of Eco-environment of Three Gorges Reservoir Rogion,Ministory of Education,School of Life Science,Southwest University,Chongqing 400715)
The luxuriant forests in the upstreams of Minjiang should have provided the natural barrier for the region, however, these woodlands were mostly distributed on the slopes of high mountains and deep gorges. The long-term over-cutting has greatly reduced the water storage and conservation capacity of the forests, which resulted in the damage of bio-diversity,the frequent occurrence of natural disasters, the increase of debris flow and landslide and the constant expansion of desertified area. After tree-felling was forbidden in 1998,the campaign of the development of western region provided the opportunity for the ecological rehabilitation, the restoration and reconstruction of degraded forest ecosystem in the region, but there still was the long arduous task.
