Effects of Different Oxygen Concentration on Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon

[Objective] The purpose was to study the dynamic law of soil microbial biomass carbon(SMBC)under special oxygen(O2) culture condition.[Method] Response of SMBC to different O2 concn.was investigated during corn stalk decomposition by laboratory incubation experiment.[Result] The addition of corn stalk in soil excitated the growth of soil microorganism,SMBC in each treatment reached peak of whole incubation period on first day and then dropped rapidly,SMBC went down slowly after 90 d.Under the culture condition with different O2 concn., the difference on SMBC among different treatments was not notable during short times from 0 d to 15 d and SMBC maintained the high quantity continuously when the O2 was 0.SMBC was increased with the elevation of oxygen concn.and the difference on SMBC among different treatments was notable during long culture times from 30 d to 270 d.[Conclusion] Soil organic carbon,humic substances,fulvic acid and humin were positively correlated with SMBC in each treatment,resp.The water-soluble organic carbon was positively correlated with SMBC(r=0.649,P0.05) when O2 was 21%,which indicated that normal atmosphere condition was more advantageous to the activity of soil microorganism.

Microbial biornass in no- tillage top soil is 51.7%and 26.0%higher than those in plowing and direct drilling soils(0-7.5cm);The turnover rates of soil microbial biomass are 1. 17yr~(-1) in plowing soil(0-15cm),0. 66 in no-tillage and 0.74 in direct drilling soils(0-7.5cm),with minimal difference for tillage or depth in lower soil layers;The nutrients immobilized by microbes and their flux through microb biomass are greater than their uptake by crops。The principal function of the microbial biomass is thus toaccumulate and conserve nutrients in a biologically active form during seedling period of crops when crops are growing rapidly and absorbing much nutrients from soil,and then to release nutrients to promote crop growth。;Estimation for Biomass and Turnover of Soil Microorganisms[J];Chinese Journal of Ecology;1993-06
