Zonal Origin Theory of Dry Farming in Northern China

SU Hai-yang(Research Center for the Construction of Longyou Culture,Tianshui Normal University,Tianshui,Gansu 741001)
The development of environmental changes in Pleistocene and primitive agriculture in Late Paleolith was discussed.Natural environment in China had changed significantly since quaternary period. Most parts of Northern China were unfit for the growth of plants which preferred warm surroundings under the cold conditions in Late Pleistocene, such as broomcorn millet, millet and so on.But some microlithic locations in warm zones of southeastern edge had entered gathering agriculture stage, which might become a part of agricultural original zones of millet agriculture. At Early Holocene(about 12-8 kaBP) is unstable heating period, millet agriculture might emerge in gulches, sloping fields and mesas in front of mountains in southeastern edges of Loess Plateau, valley terraces in hilly area of qinlin mountains, hilly areas and planes in upper reaches of Huai River as well as stream valleys and mesas in south part of Shantung hills. At Latter end or middle Holocene, sandy loess lands in the east of Qinghai, central and east of Gansu,Ningxia, north of Shaanxi, central and north of Shanxi, north of Hebei, central and east in Inner Mongolia, central and west of Liaoning, might become the most important original zones of broomcorn millet agriculture due to the improvement of natural conditions.
