Relationship between Ear Characters and Yield in Rice

[Objective] The purpose was to study the relationship between ear characters and yield formation in rice.[Method] With 36 rice varieties as tested materials,the randomized block design was used in field experiments.Some ear characters such as leaf area index in heading stage,panicle angle in mature stage,ear length,primary rachis branches and secondary rachis branches,seeds per panicle,unfulfilled grains and 1 000-grain weight were determined to study the relationships among ear characters and the relationships between them and yield,yield components as well as source-sink.[Result] There were extremely significant or significant positive correlations among spikelets per panicle,primary rachis branches,secondary rachis branches as well as grain density.The effects of secondary rachis branches on increasing spikelets per panicle and grain density were greater.The relationships between grain density and grain angle stem,ear length were showed to be quadratic curves.The grain yield was extremely negatively correlated with panicle angle and ear length.The relationships between grain density,grain-leaf ratio and yield were showed to be parabola.If grain density was 9-12 grains/cm and the grain-leaf ratio was 1.1-1.2 grains/cm2,the rice yield was higher.[Conclusion] This study provided a theoretical basis for breeding rice ideotype.
