Effect of Water-logging Stress Germination on Growth of Maize Cultivars and Assessment on Water-logging Tolerance at Seedling Stage

[Objective] The aim was to select maize cultivars with higher water-logging tolerance effectively. [Method] The relationship among germination percentage,biomass of different parts and water-logging tolerance of 16 maize cultivars at seedling stage was investigated using germination experiment. [Result] Water-logging stress significantly reduced germination potential,germination percentage,biomass of different parts of maize seedling,and there was obvious difference among different genotypes. Furthermore,there was closely positive correlation between stress coefficient of germination percentage and total plant biomass,while no significant correlation existed between stress coefficient of germination percentage and the ratio of roots to shoot,neither did total plant biomass and the ratio of roots to shoot. [Conclusion] Water-logging tolerance and the ability of maize seedling to recover from stress injury might be assessed using germination percentage of maize cultivars under water-logging stress condition.
