Study on Algae Removal Effect of Sodium Hypochlorite under Different Concentration and pH Value

[Objective] To study the influence of different concentrations and different pH value on killing the Selenastrum caprlcornurum and the discolourization of chlorophyll a with sodium hypochlorite. [Method] The effect of S. caprlcornurum killed by sodium hypochlorite in different conditions and the activity of discolored algae cell was studied through measuring the cells and the contents of chlorophyll a. [Result] The results showed that higher concentrations favors discolourization of chlorophyll a, but algae removal was not evident. The discolored rate of chlorophyll a at pH 4.7 was 12 times higher than that at pH 9.4 under the concentrations of 3 mg/L of sodium hypochlorite. The amount of the algae was winded down when the inoculums with different discolored rate (95% and 100%) was centrifugalize to re-inoculated into the fresh SE media. [Conclusion] The discolored rate of chlorophyll a by sodium hypochlorite was higher with the lower pH value. The reproductive capacity of S. caprlcornurum was lost without the chlorophyll a. So the method using sodium hypochlorite by adjusting the pH value to prevent from the algae outbreak was feasible.
