Criteria of choosing spouse in English upper-and-middle class from 16th - 18th century

FU Xin-qiu (Sociology College, ANU, Wuhu 241000, China)
During this period from 16th to 18th century, deep transformation took place in such fields as its economy, politics, religion, ideology and culture, while the criteria of spouse-choosing of the English upper-and-middle class did not change much. The elements as emotions, age, social rank, possessions, religion belief and virtue were taken in consideration in spouse-choosing. They admitted love was the base of marriage, but took more attention to the material base and match in family background compared with the lower class.
