Analysis of The Dead from Perspective of Plato's "Cave Theory"

QIN Dan-dan,SUN Sheng-zhong(Scholl of Foreign Studies,Anhui Normal University,Wuhu Anhui 241000,China)
In light of Plato's "Cave Theory",analyze the mental states of all the characters in The Dead and offer a new interpretation of Gabriel's epiphany.Just like the shadows watched by the chained prisoners in Plato's cave, what have been perceived by these characters are either illusory shadows or distorted reality. In the story, only Gabriel finally gains epiphany and his three unpleasant incidents leading up to his epiphany echo the three stages of "Shadow"、"Faith" and "Form" in human beings' cognitive process. This new perspective of interpreting Joyce's epiphany would deepen philosophically the thematic interpretation from a single westerner's awakening to the whole humanity's expedition towards truth.
