A Cognitive Approach to Discourse Coherence

LIU Jing-xia(School of Foreign Studies,Three Gorges University,Yichang 443002,Hubei,China)
Based on ICM theory in Lakoff's Experiential Realism, the "Cognitive World" approach explores the nature of discourse coherence and has a guiding function in the analysis of discourse coherence.Cognitive world involves two parts: ICM(Idealized Cognitive Models) and background knowledge in the receptor's mind. When the information in a discourse corresponds to the receptor's ICM and background knowledge through the activated route, this discourse is coherent.
