The Allelopathy of Myriophyllum Spicatum on Freshwater Algae

To pursue an effective method to control fresh water algae,a culture solution of submerged macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum was tested to study its allelopathic inhibitory effects on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa and Scenedesmus obliquus with pure or mixed culture,as well as on the growth of algae from the pond water.Our results demonstrated that M.spicatum culture solution inhibited the growth of M.aeruginosa and S.obliquus,with M.aeruginosa being more sensitive.M.spicatum culture solution also induced a decrease in chlorophyll a,a reduction in algal photosynthesis intensity,and a depression in the ability of alga cells to deoxidize TTC,indicating its potential to inhibit the growth of algae.Our present study showed M.spicatum is an effective way to control algae-bloom.
