Diagnosis and treatment of intramedullary spinal cord tumors

Objective To summarize the experience of diagnosis and management of intramedullary spinal cord tumors.Methods The database of 35 patients with intramedullary spinal cord tumors treated in the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University Between April 2004 and December 2008.Results Postoperative pathological diagnosis showed 13 ependymomas,2 astrocytomas,2 oligodendroglioma,2 lipoma,1 myeloma,1 keratose,1 metastatic tumor,1 angeioma,and 1 neurinoma.24 cases were treated by surgeon.Total tumor removal was performed in 16 patients,including 14 patients with microscope.The neurological function improved or was the same as the one of preoperation in 21 cases,deteriorated in 3 compared with pre-operative function.Conclusion Up to now,microsurgical treatment was one of the most effective measures.The application of intraoperative neurophysiology monitoring and ultrasonagraphy were helpful.
