Protection of Total Astragalus Extract Against Chemotherapy-induced Leukopenia and Immunosuppression in Tumor Bearing Mice

Objective: To investigate whether total astragalus extralct(TAE),could protect against chemotherapy-induced leukopenia and immunosuppression,and whether it affects Cyclophosphamide(CTX) or 5-Fluorouracil(5-Fu) antitumor activity. Method: 5-Fu-induced immunosuppressed model in HepA tumor bearing mice and CTX-induced leukopenia in normol and S180 bearing mice were established. Result: CTX markedly decreased WBC count of normal and S180 bearing mice ,all the above leukopenia were reduced significantly by TAE. Immunosuppression of 5-Fu in mice bearing with HepA as measured by decreases of the thymus index and serum interlukin-2(IL-2 )level was significantly alleviated by TAE. Moreover,the antitumor activity of CTX or 5-Fu ,as assayed by tumor weight of mice bearing with S180 or HepA was not reduced or was increased by TAE treatment.Conclusion: TAE may protect immune system and bone marrow against chemotherapy-induced toxicity with increasing or without interfering with their antitumor activity in mice.
