Objective To validate the clinical efficacy and safety of Compound Pugongying Decoction,a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) prescription,in the treatment of acute suppurative tonsillitis. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted.A total of 106 patients with acute suppurative tonsillitis diagnosed as eroded tonsillitis of lung-stomach exuberant heat syndrome were enrolled in this study and randomized into two groups: TCM group and penicillin group. All patients in both groups were treated with the same symptomatic treatment and penicillin G;additionally, patients in TCM group were treated with Compound Pugongying Decoction.A treatment course contained 5 days. The clinical effects and recovery rates of fervescence, pharyngodynia and swelling of tonsils as well as adverse drug reactions were compared between two groups. Results A total of 106 patients(53 in TCM group,53 in penicillin group) were enrolled in this trial,of whom 6 were dropped out(3 from TCM group,3 from penicillin group). The recovery and obvious effect was 82.0%(41/50) in TCM group, and 52.0%(26/50) in penicillin group;there was a significant difference in the recovery and obvious effect between the two groups(P0.01).The recovery rate of fervescence, pharyngodynia, and swelling of tonsils was 68.3%,78.00%,72.00% in TCM group, respectively, and 40.0%,50.0%,42.0% in penicillin group, respectively;there were significant differences in recovery rates of main symptoms between the two groups(P0.01).Adverse drug reactions were not observed in TCM group, and two patients in penicillin group had skin rash and changed into the treatment of TCM.Conclusion Compound Pugongying Decoction shows a definite effect on acute suppurative tonsillitis with good safety.
