RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANATOMICAL STRUCTURE AND PHYSICO-MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF EAST-LIAONING OAK (Q.liotungensis)

The experiment was conducted with 5 trees (Quercus liotungensis) grown in the Zhong Tiao Mountains of Shan Xi Province as sample to study internal correlations between istinct anatomical characters and its correlations with physico--mechanical pro pertiesthrough path analysis, principal components analysis and regression analysis. Based on principal components analysis, all anatomical characters was reduced forthe first time to two comprehensive factors (or principal components) --"cell feature"fector (fiber length, fiber diameter, microfibril angle, radial and tangential diameters ofvessel etc.) and "tissue proportion" factor (fiber proportion, vessel proportion and par-enchyma tissue proportion ), which are actually reflection of the "quality" ("cellfeature "factor) and "quantity" ("tissue proportion" factor) of wood cells. Path ana-lysis indicated that the two factoros are, in effect, basic factors influencing wood phy-sico-mechanical properties. Tissue proportions determine the amount of cell wal substanes, hence wood density.But vessel proportion, among tissue proportions, is a dominant factor. The anatomical factors influencing wood shrinkage is much varied with the type ofshrinkages. For trans verse shrinkage (radial and tangential direction), fiber diameteris a dominant factor, and volumetric shrinkage is mainly influenced by tissue proportio-ns as well as microfibril angle; For differential shrinkage, microfibril angle turns outprimary and tissue proportions secondary. Wood tensile strength is directly correlated with microfibril angle and tissue propor-tions. And yet wood basic density is only a relative quantitative index of cell wall su-bstances. It, therefore, is not as good an indicator of tensile strength.
