STUDY ON THE DIELECTRIC CONSTANTS OF WOOD

Wu Ye (Institute of Chemical Processing and Utilization of Forest Products, Chinese Academy of Forestry)  
Dielectric constant measurements under radio frequency have been made for 50 wood species in this study. Especially, the dielectric constants of Armand Pine (Pinus armandi Franch), Tabulaeformed Pine (Pinus tabulaeformis), Schima (Schima superba Gardn et Champ), Blue Japanese Oak (Cyclobalanopsis glauca Oerst), anld Oriental Oak (Quercus variabilis Bl. ) were measured at frequencies from 100 Gilohertz to 26 Megahertz, moisture conditions from overdry to 100% or so, temperatures from 0 to 100℃, and with the electric field alined with three dimensionsThe behavior of wood of all species studied is qualitatively similar. The dielectric constant increases with increasing moisture content or temperature, and decreases with increasing frequency. Generally, the Logitudinal dielectric constant is higher than the transverse one. In transverse, the radial dielectric constant is as same as tangential one or slightly different. There are a Linear relationship between the dielectric constant and wood density.
