Researches on Biological Characters of Semanotus bifasciatus

YAN Wenbin(Forestry Bureau of Dongzhi County,Yaodu 247200)  
The investigation on the biological characters of Semanotus bifasciatus showed that the pest completes its life cycle in one year in Anhui area. The imago overwinter in stems and starts to come out of the emergence holes by bitting the bark in the mid and late February of the next year.The largest hatching rate appear in late March,and the larva begin to pupate after the middle September.In the late September to the early or mid October,the pupa begin to emerge, then the imago hide in the trunks to over winter. When the imago come out of the emergence holes, they eat nothing and mate repeatedly.Each mated female can lay (6884±3175) eggs. Semanotus bifasciatus damges trees in its larval stage. The pupa hide in the subcutis of the host plant and damage the transport nutrient by eating the phloem. This is the reason why the invaded plants die.
