Analysis of heterosis, combining ability and heritability of quality characters in Japonica hybrid rice

Five BT-type CMS lines and 40 three-line japonica restorer lines were crossed in a p×q incomplete diallel design to study heterosis, combining ability and heritability for quality characters in Japonica hybrid rice. The results were as follow.(1) Ten quality characters showed the over-high-parent heterosis except for the length/width ratio(L/W) and 11 quality characters showed the positive average heterosis.(2) Variations in brown rice rate(BRR), milled rice rate(MRR), head rice rate(HRR), chalky grain rate(CGR), chalkiness degree(CD), grain length(GL), and amylose content(AC) were mainly due to the gene additive effect and variations in grain width(GW), L/W, gelatinization temperature(GT), and gel consistency(GC) were mainly due to the gene non-additive effect.(3) Nine quality characters were mainly influenced by restorer lines except for GL and L/W.(4) The order of the narrow heritability in these traits was CGR﹥CD﹥HRR﹥MRR﹥AC﹥BRR﹥GC﹥GL﹥GT﹥L/W﹥GW.
