Experimental study on main cause of gas explosion in coal mines

In order to find the cause and factors that influence the coal mine gas explosions, a lot of explosion tests were performed in a 7 m~3 explosion vessel. The explosion vessel is 10 m long, 1m wide and 1m high. Its one end side is closed and other end side is open to atmosphere. The length—diameter ratio of the explosion vessel is 7. Its top may be upward, level or downward, that simulates a length of coal lane. Natural gas was used in these tests as combustibles. High frequency electric park generator is used for ignition measures. 18 explosion tests were performed in 7 m~3 explosion vessel with downward top. Input volume of natural gas is 1.1~2.8 m~3. 17 tests do not explode. Only one test explodes, but explosion voice is small. The flame ejected from explosion vessel open is very short. These tests demonstrate that the downward coal lane has "self cleaning" effect, i. e gas can automatically move to atmosphere by means of buoyancy. 5 explosion tests were performed in 7 m~3 explosion vessel with upward top. Input volume of natural gas is 1.4 m~3 in all tests. 2 tests explode, 3 tests do not explode. This is concerned with "ignition start time"—the time period between stop feed natural gas and start ignition time. The ignition start time of all exploded tests are less then 10 s. These tests demonstrate that the upward coal lane has self deterioration" effect, i. e gas can accumulate in the top space at the lane, cause gas explosion.
