Adsorption of As(Ⅴ) by nascent manganese dioxide

The present paper introduces the authors' study on the nascent manganese dioxide for its highly efficient adsorption function. In doing so, they have analyzed the reaction of MnSO_4 with KMnO_4 in aqueous solution and determined its basic properties. A series of adsorption experiments indicate that the nascent manganese dioxide has strong absorption power and nice kinetic properties for As(Ⅴ), which can be properly described by the Lagergren pseudo-second order rate equation. The actual adsorption-pH curve appears as “∽” shape in the investigated pH range when the peak of the removal ration for As(Ⅴ) as a function of pH is observed under about pH=6.5. In a solution of pH=5.5 Langmuir model can simulate the adsorption equilibrium of As(Ⅴ) on the nascent manganese dioxide, while the Freundlich model can also be found in a solution of pH=6.5. Our experiments also prove that the diluted NaOH solution can also be an efficient eluant for the desorption of As(Ⅴ) from MnO_2, and the desorptive rate of As(Ⅴ) could be as high as 82.7% after dipping the sample into 1 mol/L NaOH solution for an hour.
