2D FEM analysis for coupled thermo hydro-mechanical processes in saturated-unsaturated media

High level radioactive waste disposal in a deep geology is expected to lead to a particularly complicated detrimental situation,for the decay of high level radioactive waste may have a strong impact on the host rockmass thermally and a repository is inevitable to be formulated beneath the surface of ground floor.An assessment of the performance of a nuclear waste repository involves the evaluation of the combined effect of mechanical,hydraulic and thermal processes in the complex geological system.For this purpose,the present author first of all tries to establish the momentum equilibrium equation,the continuity equation for water,the energy balance equation and the elasto-plastic matrix.And, secondly,all the governing equations are discretized in the space domain as well as in the time domain respectively by using the Galerkin method.And,then,he has developed a two dimensional FEM code for analyzing the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical elasto-plastic processes in saturated-unsaturated porous media tentatively.At last,through numerical computation and simulation for an assumed coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical phenomena in nuclear waste repository,the paper wants to show that,compared with the saturated state,the distribution of stress, the ground water flow and temperature in the buffer material as well as the surrounding rock mass in the unsaturated condition are obviously different,especially with the saturation degree of the buffer material,which turns from unsaturated state into saturated one,and the relevant pore pressures would change from negative values into positive values with time.Therefore the author also tested and verified the validity of the code qualitatively.
