Study on size distribution of aerosol composition in winter in Beijing

The present paper aims to report the authors' study on the size distribution and its change of aerosol composition in winter in Beijing. The authors of the paper began to collect samples and observational data since June, July and then December in 2000. Since then, comparison and analysis has been continued based on more and more samples it has accumulated. The results from its researches show that there has been a fine trend of the aerosol size, especially accumulation mode particle in the size from 0.1 μm to 2.0 μm, which has kept a central value of peak located at the 0.12 μm size. It has been found that the percentage of aerosol composition in the size less than 2.0 μm accounts for 26.9%, while the others take about 73.1%. The fine aerosol concentrations have an ever more increasing trend. After changing the aerosol source composition, the primary particles have obviously decreased with the secondary particles increasing with more harmful and more unmanageable features. As early as in middle of 1980's, the Chinese Research Academy of Environment Science and a number of universities have also made studies on the character of size distribution of aerosol composition in Beijing. However, not many important advances have been seen in this connection. Two observations using a kind of Surface Particle 2D-C Probe System of U.S.A were put in operation to observe and study the air particle concentrations and size distributions inside of Beijing urban areas and the suburb of Beijing in June, July and December 2000, to measure the degrees and characteristics of aerosol composition of the city. All the progress has been made due to the great attention paid by the governmental departments and the research areas in an concerted effort.
