Application of strength-reducing factor method to stability analysis of Xuetangwan Land-slide

The present paper is aimed at introducing the authors' application of the strength-reducing factor method to the Xuetangwan Land-slide in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (Yangtze). As is known, FEM (Factor Evaluation Method) has been developed based on the method which can help to secure the force equilibrium balance while considering the relationship between the stress and the strain of materials. It helps to make the computation results much more precise and justifiable. The authors had been trying to use the nonlinear nature of the method for analyzing the stability on the above said area. Our application results show that it comes into perfect conformity to the traditional grid limit equilibrium method and can reflect the destruction pattern of the land-slide efficiently. The destruction mode can also be demonstrated by safety factor and the maximum shear strain, so that it can contribute to our comprehensive understanding of the land-sliding destruction mechanism. Therefore, to some extent, strength reduction FEM offers a new approach to better evaluation of the land-sliding stability.
