Water quality evaluation in Taihu Lake with the cluster-factor analysis method

The present paper intends to report the authors' evaluation of the water quality of Taihu Lake by using the method of cluster-factor analysis.As is known,Taihu Lake is heavily contaminated these years and waiting for proper control.In order to find the main factors leading to the pollution,we have tried to appraise its water quality on the basis of analyzing the data of 2005 by using the method of cluster-factor analysis,that is,to divide the lake into four water areas,which are consistent with the actual spatial distribution of eutrophication.The cluster-factor analysis helps to find that the nutrients existing in the different areas are significantly correlated with the corresponding water qualities,indicating that nutrient contents are the main factors in Taihu Lake.Meanwhile,with the different natural positions and pressures imposed on different water areas by the water users,the types of nutrients vary with the water areas.Water areasⅠ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ are controlled respectively by phosphorus,nitrogen,phosphor and nitrogen.However,water area Ⅳ is mainly affected by chlorophyll, temperature and arsenic.By this token,the method of cluster-factor analysis is used to evaluate the water qualities in different areas of the lake correspondingly.The results of evaluation indicate that the depravation of water quality is caused,on the one hand,by the loss of nutrients and chlorophyll,and,on the other hand,the impact of arsenic on the water quality also proves remarkable. Therefore,more attention should be paid to the prevention from the arsenic toxicity as well as the protection from other pollutants.
