Pulp and paper effluent tertiary treatment by micro-electrolysis technology

The present paper intends to introduce the author's development of a tertiary treatment method of pulp and paper wastewater treatment by micro-electrolysis technology. For the research purpose, the authors have done experiments with the pulp and paper effluent from the secondary bio-chemical treatment process by using micro-electrolytic technology and investigated such working parameters as the iron chipping dosage, activated carbon dosage, original pH value of effluent and reaction time, as are needed. The results show that the optimal reaction conditions are supposed to be pH 3.0, 8.0 g/L of activated carbon, 40.0 g/L of iron chipping and with 60 min reaction time. Under optimal conditions, the COD_ Cr removal efficiency can be expected to rise as high as 58.52%. At the same time, the reaction can be intensified in the presence of hydrogen peroxide due to the introduction of the subsequent Fenton reaction oxidation, and the hydroxyl radicals generated by Fenton oxidation can help to oxidize the refractory organic pollutants non-selectively in the effluent. However, the author's experimental data indicate that there may still exist an optimal hydrogen peroxide dosage of 7.17 mmol/L, beyond which the reagent may exhibit an inhibitory effect for the reaction, which may result in a 13.71% increment for COD_ Cr removal. As a post-treating method of adding calcium hydroxide in the supernatant after micro-electrolytic reaction, it can display a role of adjusting pH value of the treated sewage. Next, the calcium hydroxide coagulation can be expected to further the removing rate of the residual COD_ Cr and ferric ions in the effluent. If combined with the calcium hydroxide coagulation properly, the technology of intensified micro-electrolysis would be able to result in 75% COD_ Cr removal and over 95% color removing rate, respectively. Successful trial application of the newly developed method helps to meet the state wastewater discharge standardⅠ(GB 3544—2001). Thus, the given improved method proves of great value for the tertiary treatment in the pulp and paper industry.
