Effect of the toxicity of monocrotophos on reproductive power of the male guppy,Poecilia reticulate

This paper intends to introduce our study of the negative effect of monocrotophos on the reproductive capability and the testes composition of guppy. As is a widespread concern nowadays, some pesticides are likely to lead to the reduction and even ridding of human beings and wildlife of their reproducing capability by disrupting their endocrine function. After a period of 40day exposure of 1 mg/L monocrotophos, compared and contrasted with the unexposed fish(blank control), we have achieved results which reveal a significant reduction not only in the spawn action of female fish, but also in the number and survival ratio of the offspring. The color of male guppy (Poecilia reticulata) has been found altered from nacarat into dull orange. The micrograghs shows that the spermatocyte and Sertoli cells in the testes have been seriously damaged as a result of exposure to monocrotophos and exhibited a time-dependent effect. Furthermore, the chromatin of spermatocyte has been noticeably extravasated. We have also found that a number of cysts with partly lysed basement membrane appear with the prolong of the exposure time length, some of which were even fused with other cysts. Moreover, the spermatogenetic stage proves not the same in one cyst. In testes, the cysts containing all the different spermatogenetic stages are found to have decreased in number with the irregularly arrangement. Compared with the control group, the testes of the exposed fish now contain less spermatogenetic cysts but with more mature spermatozeugmata and free spermatozoa. Thus, the results indicate a tendency of transformation from the originally existing spermatogenetic stage into spermatozeugmata, with no replenishment of the early stages. Meanwhile, some cavities have been detected in the centre of testes at the end of exposure. Most of the efferent duct membranes lysed and the hypertrophied Sertoli cells increased, leading to the partly disintegration of some of spermatozeugmata and more free spermatozoa in the testes. Thus, the above results help to disclose that the monocrotophos have impaired the spermatogenesis and decreased the number and density of sperm of male guppy, and eventually resulting in the unhappy reduction of their offspring.
