Study on adsorption of methylene blue by carbon nanotubes

This paper is concerned with the author's investigation of the adsorption of methylene blue by the carbon nanotubes mainly through theoretical analysis and experimentation. The main purpose of ours is to test the concentration and pH of methylene blue solution, the adsorption time as well as the adsorption temperature. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a one-dimensional nano-structure material, able to adsorb organic compounds, and therefore can be a kind of material likely to play a role in treating industrial sewage. It is just for this reason that we have made efforts in studying the adsorption mechanism of methylene blue on the carbon blue. The results of our study show that the adsorption equilibrium time of methylene blue on the carbon nanotubes is 3 hours and adsorption rate constant is 384.49 h-1. In addition, the adsorption fits the Langmuir equation well, with the alkalescence being favorable for the adsorption. Our experiments determine that the equilibrium concentration of methylene blue solution is about 0.036 84 g·L-1 with its adsorption mass being 36.0 mg·g-1. Furthermore, the adsorption temperature may also have potential influence on the adsorption capacity. And, finally, it is deduced that the monolayer adsorption free energy of methylene blue on CNTs is -31.35 kJ·mol-1 and multilayer adsorption free energy is -17.36 kJ·mol-1. The adsorption of methylene blue on carbon nanotubes is endothermic reaction, which contains physical adsorption and chemical adsorption, keeping physical adsorption and chemical adsorption. Therefore, the multilayer adsorption is by nature no more than a physical adsorption.
