Study on settlement characteristics of simulating semi-aerobic landfill with leachate recirculation

This paper has put forward a concept that the settlement of closed semi-aerobic landfills with leachate recirculation is caused mainly due to the consolidation settlement and degradation settlement, both of which are mutual interdependent and interactive with each other.We have done a lab-scale simulating experiment with the mechanism and process of the settlement of semi-aerobic landfills with leachate recirculation so as to take necessary countermeasures.The experiment ran for 18 months.As the result of our experiments, significant settlement has been found after closure.It was found that the settlement process turned to be noticeable during 2-4 d after closure, the settlement quantity was found increasing to 5-10 cm every day, and the three-day total settlement quantity would amount to 17- 24 cm, approximately amounting for 23.7%-31.7% of the total settlement quantity.Most of the consolidation settlement seemed to take place in the three days, then gradually reduced.15 days later, it can be found that the settlement quantity would further slow down, with its settlement quantity everyday basically dropped to below 1 cm, so little that the effect of consolidation settlement can be negligible. Thus, it can be precisely summed up in the following way: the degradation settlement for the first 5 months tended to get faster with the monthly settlement quantity being about 6-10 cm.Later, the settlement slowed down, with the monthly settlement was basically the same: about 1 cm or so.Thus, it can be said that the consolidation settlement and degradation settlement mainly occurred during the period of the first 15 days and 5 months separately.After 5 months, the degradation settlement would get gradually diminished.Both kinds of settlement amounts can account for about 43.8%-52.7% and 47.3 %-56.2% of the total settlement amounts, separately, and 14.7%-22.6% and 18.8%-21.5% of the height of filled wastes separately.Leachate recirculation accelerated the process of degradation settlement.There will be differential settlement in semi-aerobic landfills with leachate recirculation due to the existence of aeration tubes.Since there may be found differences in air supply, the farther away from the aeration pipe, and in turn, the smaller the settlement quantity and settlement ratio would be.The curve fitting for the settlement ratio of monitoring points has been found with the fitting curve being y = 7×10~(-7) x~2-0.0007x + 0.4541 (0≤x≤240 cm), and the gradient 6.05° caused by different settlement types.Thus, the sloping curve has been found affecting the design and installation of leachate recirculation facilities, in addition to the landfill gas-treating facilities.Besides, while the diameter of the aeration pipe is 4.5 cm, its affecting radius should be 240 cm.
