Immobilization of cadmium contaminated soils using natural clay minerals

An outdoor pot-culture experiment was conducted to study the effect of three natural clay minerals on the immobilization of cadmium contaminated soils collected from Daye County, Hubei Province.The effects of sepiolite, kaolinite and bentonite on the plant growth and Cd accumulation in Brassica Chinensis are investigated. In addition, pH value and available Cd concentration of polluted soils were determined.The results showed that the yield increasing effect of sepiolite treatments was better than that of kaolinite and bentonite treatments according to the changing tendency of biomass, although the three clay minerals could not significantly increase biomass of Brassica Chinensis.The three clay minerals could effectivley reduce Cd concentration of Brassica Chinensis.Sepiolite treatments significantly decreased Cd concentration in the shoots with a maximal decrease of 27.88 % , and bentonite treatments markedly reduced Cd concentration in the roots with a maximal decrease of 25.94% , while the decreasing effect of kaolinite treatments on Cd concentration was the worst.The application of sepiolite could significantly increase pH values of soils, and could markedly reduce available Cd concentration of soils.However, the application of kaolinite could slightly decrease pH values of soils while available Cd concentration of soils was not affected markedly.The application of bentonite could not significantly affect the pH values of soils, but could markedly reduce available Cd concentration of soils.The application of sepiolite and bentonite could significantly decrease the concentration of exchangeable and carbonite combined Cd, and increase the concentration of residual Cd on the other hand.Kaolinite is only able increase the concentration of carbonite combined Cd.In summary, the immobilization effectiveness of three natural clay minerals was in the order of sepiolite bentonite kaolinite.
