Amendment effects of cadmium and lead to the co-contaminated soils through sepiolite and phosphate

The present paper would like to report the findings of our outdoor pot-culture experiments with the different sepiolite treatments and the amendment effects of cadmium and lead on the co-contaminated soils through sepiolite and phosphate by using the soil sample we collected from the Daye County,Hubei.As is known,the single treatment of sepiolite could not significantly promote the growth of Brassica chinensis,but the single treatment of phosphate and the compound treatment of sepiolite and phosphate could remarkably increase the dry biomass of shoots and roots,whose maximal increase rate could reach 24.84 % and 65.34 %,respectively.Furthermore, our experiments,with the compound treatment of sepiolite and phosphate prove to be more efficient than other treatments,whose maximal reducing rate through Cd and Pb concentrations in shoots could be as high as 59.76 % and 38.95%,respectively.In addition,the single treatment of phosphate proves more efficient than other treatments, whose maximal reduction rate is 32.19% and 44.30%,in reducing Cd and Pb concentrations in roots,respectively.But the decreasing effect of the sepiolite treatment on Cd and Pb concentrations of B. chinensis was the worst.Moreover,the amendment treatments could significantly increase the pH values of soils.Most of amendment treatments could markedly reduce the available Cd and Pb concentrations of the soil.In summary,the compound treatment of 6 % sepiolite and phosphate is the most effective treatment for immobilization of Cd and Pb co-contaminated soils.
