Physiological response of spinach to chlorpyrifos stress

This paper is to investigate the effects of different concentrations of chlorpyrifos spray on the antioxidant enzymes and APase activities, malondiadehyde content, relative conductivity and pesticide residue in the spinach plants. The results of our investigation show that different concentrations of the chlorpyrifos spray can indeed bring about different effects on the activities of the antioxidant enzymes . That is to say, high concentration of chlorpyrifos spray tends to inhibit the activity of SOD. At 4 h after the spray, the plants would give a stronger response to the activity of CAT on the condition of higher concentration of chlorpyrifos spray than the contrast. The POD activity in the spinach would be inhibited at 4 h after the pesticide spray . Until 21 d after the treatments, the activity of POD seems likely to be lower than the contrast. This result indicates that such effects on the POD activity tend to be longer than other antioxidant enzymes, moreover, the effect proves greater with the increase of concentration of chlorpyrifos totally. In addition, it has proved that different concentrations of chlorpyrifos are likely to help to increase the content of MDA in the plant. The activity of APase would be obviously inhibited with the increase of concentration of chlorpyrifos totally. It was not until the later period of pesticide stress, the inhibition of chlorpyrifos began to be gradually decreased. Thus, the determination result of the pesticide residue in the spinach shows the half-life of the chlorpyrifos turns to be longer with the increase of chlorpyrifos concentration. Therefore, when using pesticides to prevent spinach from insect pest, we should try to reduce the dosage of chlorpyrifos, with a view to minimising the damage of chlorpyrifos in spinach, and improving edible security of spinach.
