Tracing the competition mechanism of Microcystis aeruginosa

The aim of this paper is to explore the M. aeruginosadominating mechanism based on the past and present research advances in the aquatic ecosystem with M. aeruginosa. In our research , we attempted to expound the dominant physical, chemical and biological factors that were expected to lead M. aeruginosa to becoming the dominant species in phytoplankton community while discussing the mechanism of its dominance. Furthermore, we also attempted to make a contrast analysis of M. aeruginosa with other alga in order to find why it could thrive in the wide range of temperature and light intensity and why it could so efficiently utilize its surrounding nutrients such as N, P, Fe and CO_2. Moreover, M. aeruginosa could move towards the radiant energy-rich or nutrient-rich zones due to vacuole existence. M. aeruginosa could also keep itself away from the prey of zooplankton by colony formation to get rid of all other surrounding allelopathy substances to inhibit the growth of other alga. Therefore, we believe that it is these physiological advantages of M. aeruginosa that enables itself to result in its own dominance in the aquarium context. We also suggest that the future research should be turned on not only the research of the alga growth period in summer but also on the colony accumulation and settling process to the sediment surface in autumn and recruiting process in spring, because Eutrophication in China's lakes is one of the most serious water-pollution problems both for the present stage and for the near future.
